WISE Presents Annual Women Of The Year Awards To Female Sports Execs

Dodgers CEO Jamie McCourt, MLB Senior VP & CMO Jacqueline Parkes and MLS Exec VP Kathryn Carter were honored as Women of the Year at the annual Women in Sports and Events (WISE) luncheon in N.Y. MLB HOFer Tommy Lasorda introduced McCourt, praising the exec for her stewardship over the franchise. "When the McCourts took over the Dodgers, it wasn't easy," he said. "In the five years that I've known her, I've gained a family."

McCourt referenced Jackie Robinson during her remarks, saying that she tries to follow his example in the business world.

"Making a difference -- that's what baseball's all about; that's what sports are all about."

MLB President & COO Bob DuPuy introduced Parkes, calling her one of the most influential execs in all of sports.  Parkes, whose dad was the Mets' team doctor, said she grew up in baseball and credited her parents with jump-starting her career. "We couldn't use the word 'can't' in our house growing up," she said.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber introduced Carter, calling her "probably the most respected sales and marketing  executive in all of soccer." Carter, a former G for William & Mary, said she has brought that on-field competitiveness to the business world. "You've got to be a little bit nuts and competitive," she said.  "You've got to hate to lose. ... It's OK to be a woman and be different. We have different views. We have a different voice."

For more updates from the WISE luncheon, see the SBD/SBJ Twitter page.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

WISE Within is a program connecting a group of selected mentors and mentees from the WISE membership in a structured initiative to provide career resource connections. The program is a natural extension of WISE’s mission and is designed to reflect the essence of WISE — to offer guidance and career support for the growth of women moving into executive positions in the sports and events industry.

If you are one of those trailblazers who’s been there and seen it in our industry, we welcome your participation as a mentor. If you are at a crossroads in your career and ready to move to that next level, look at expanding your resource base as a mentee.

Following the successful run of the New York WISE Within program, we are expanding to Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington D.C.

Attendees participated in a one-on-one session with their mentor/mentee and an interactive group networking session. Special thanks to The Intercontinental Hotel and Women at the Top of Their Game for providing the venue for the kick-off event.

Here are the WISE SF Mentee/Mentor Match-ups:

Ilisa Kessler with Mentor Paulette Goodrich

Mary Rudkin with Mentor Beth Schnitzer

Lindsey Schedeler with Mentor Carol Batte

Tina Unterlaender with Mentor Sharon Shapiro
